The exhibition Mountain upon Mountain. Grasshopper, by the artist Lúa Gándara, is a project curated by Eduardo Valiña that shows the result of the work carried out by the artist during her stay at the Eugenio Granell Foundation as part of the 9th Artist in Residence.
Lúa Gándara articulates a project starts from the interdisciplinary and develops a wide diversity of formats and approaches, where painting acquires a prominent role. By means of this option, the artist configures a wide variety of expressions in a plastic space where she moves freely through colours, strokes and shapes, establishing that place as an amalgam of rhythmic or musical structures, and presenting parallels with other practices of her own, such as performance or actionism.
On the other hand, the artist creates signs and symbols that resemble a continuity within the discourse, establishing variations that open dialogues from everyday space, using humour as a lure to introduce us into an emotional territory that ranges from movement to elements built from the collective.
In this sense, Lúa functions as an organization, a branched structure where the contributions of other creators become part, producing materials that are related to the life context itself and that mark her trajectory based on personal moments and encounters, to produce a contextual vision related to generational issues and problems.
From this perspective, we open a field of action where the body articulates a rhythmic discourse that breaks the limits of the established to enter actions in the public space: from improvisation in the urban or rural environment, to interference in the mass media as an advertising claim. A formula that dissolves into other proposals ranging from sound or textiles, to configure a wide range of resources that include live performances and links with fashion.
Lúa Gándara (O Porriño, 1988) has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Vigo, a postgraduate degree in Sound Creation from Barcelona University and a master’s degree in Secondary Education Teaching in the specialty of Arts and Drawing. She has received awards such as New Portuguese-Galician talents at the 9th Painting Biennial, the Eixo Atlántico Painting Award and the 9th Competition of Artistic Interventions in the Galician City of Culture’s Hejduk Towers.
