10 july – 12 october
Rooms 4 and 5. First floor.

“We are now commemorating the 100th anniversary of the publication of the Surrealist Manifesto, which is equivalent to officially recognizing the starting point of the theorization of a revolutionary movement that, although not artistic or literary, has as its essential objective the liberation of human existence and the consequent socio-cultural transformation of the world.
Centred primarily on its collective actions in Paris, Surrealism exerted a great influence on French cultural life. In 1934, Breton became aware of the need to “export” this philosophy through the “internationalization” (a term absent from his work, but constant as an intervention) of the movement, both for reasons internal and external to the group, promoting publications (manifestos, books, periodicals) in parallel with the organisation of exhibitions, reinforcing contacts in other countries, even those with an authoritarian or religious regime.
The fascination of Surrealism will be present in three different moments, satellite moments of the last day of the publication’s centenary, which will begin in September 2024 and will run until mid-2025. The occasion is so significant that it will bring together not only artists, but also important names of the movement. In this atmosphere of celebration, we are sure, the encounter will arise in an emotional way, halfway between creativity and joy”. Curator Miguel de Carvalho
