Exhibition celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Eugenio Granell Foundation
27 may, 2025 – 2026
Amparo Room. Second floor.

The Eugenio Granell Foundation opens on May 27, at 7:00 p.m., the exhibition Boutique Amparo, which is curated by Eduardo Valiña and forms part of the commemorative exhibitions of the museum’s thirtieth anniversary.

Amparo Segarra (Valencia, 1915- Madrid, 2007) was a plastic artist, theatre actress, and partner of Eugenio Granell, with whom she began her artistic activity through a joint production of collages made in Puerto Rico in the fifties, and which make up a large part of this exhibition.
Amparo fully identified with the collage technique within the surrealist movement. In her work she introduced social opinions and surrealist thoughts by using humour. A project marked by feminine aesthetics in which she created a fantastic world from the superimposition of cutouts with a clear realistic character.
One of the most outstanding elements of her work is the use of images from fashion magazines. The artist selected and cut out photographs of women, protagonists of the publications of that time, to configure compositions that, over and above their aesthetic appearance, offered a subtle critique of society. Through these images, she addressed issues such as the objectification of women, gender roles, consumption, or sexual identity.
In addition, her experience as an actress and theatre costume designer between 1944 and 1969 notably influenced her aesthetic sensibility. This theatrical training was reflected in the dramatization of her works, in the choice of visual elements, and in the ability to tell stories through the superimposition of images.
Her work also features elements from different cultures, a result of her interest in ethnic art. In many of her collages, Segarra contrasts images of different ethnicities with characters that are separate by time and location, thereby creating cultural contrasts that enrich the meaning of her compositions.
Her life was marked entirely by her political ideology and also, inevitably, by that of her lifelong partner.
This exhibition has the objective of paying tribute to the work of an essential artist in the framework of the historical avant-garde, not only due to her own contribution but also as a central part of Granell’s entire universe.
