Gotas de agua con Granell April 26 – July 22 Room Philip West. First Floor Sponsored by VIAQUA
The exhibition Gotas de agua con Granell is curated by Natalia Fernández Segarra, Director of the Eugenio Granell Foundation, with the support and coordination of Lorena Rodríguez, who is in charge of the Granell Foundation’s Department of Restoration and Collections. The exhibition is made up of works from the Granell Foundation’s collections featuring the theme of water, due to its symbolic weight in culture and art as well as its great importance for life in Galicia.
Water features prominently in Eugenio Granell’s works, as we see in the emblematic painting Homenaje a los amantes de la playa de Riazor (1980) or in Volcán de agua (1964) –inspired by Guatemala’s Volcán de Auga, where the painter lived for three years. On the other hand, we can contemplate two objects linked to this theme, El cisne de Taonela and El canto del cisne.
Completing the exhibition are works by other artists, such as his brother Mario Granell, who is represented by two works: La dama de las Islas Cálides (1990) and Untitled (1992), in addition to a collage made by Granell’s wife Amparo Segarra, La mano del pez, as well as work by the English artist Philip West, who depicts marine motifs in his paintings; and Fernández Moline, with the oil painting El encuentro (1980).
The exhibition features artworks from the extensive surrealist collection, with works by some of the movement’s most outstanding exponents, such as those of his friend Marcel Duchamp, in addition to artworks by Rik Lina, Susana Wald, Francés del Valle, Virginia Vidich, Alex Weiss, Ferrán Blanco, Anne Ethuin, Enrique Carlón and Ludwig Zeller.
The Ethnic Collection is also present in the exhibition, with a selection of African masks featuring references to the marine world by means of shells and cowries: Máscara infantil and Máscara, both from Liberia; and N'Tomo, a mask used by the Bambara people to protect children, in addition to the kachina La nieve (Zuni warrior). These objects establish a dialogue with the other works on display.
This exhibition has been organised with the collaboration and support of VIAQUA.
