THE HEART OF CLAY

Opening, February 9, 2017, 8 pm February 9 – April 16, 2017

In the summer of 1976, the Mercantile and Industrial Circle of Santiago de Compostela hosted, in Pazo de Bendaña in Plaza do Toral, which now houses the Eugenio Granell Foundation, the exhibition called I Concurso Rexional de Oleiros. This event, sponsored by Luciano García Alen and María García Ayaso, was the germ of what would become the first exhibition hall of the recently established Museo do Pobo Galego, which opened its doors on October 26 the following year.

The Eugenio Granell Foundation presents an exhibition featuring ceramic works belonging to the Museo do Pobo Galego, thereby joining the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of its founding.

The exhibition is made up of selected items from the MPG’s collection that reflect the presence and development of ceramics in Galicia throughout history. It ranges from reproductions of the first articles found in burial mounds and “castros” (Iron Age settlements), passing through Roman amphorae, to the production of the most representative ceramic workshops and some singular Sargadelos pieces, which exemplify what is, up to now, an essential link in the contemporary ceramic industry.
