JUEGOS DE EQUILIBRIO. AMPARO SEGARRA
Second Floor
The exhibition “Juegos de Equilibrio. Amparo Segarra“, curated by Eduardo Valiña, features a careful selection of collages made by the artist throughout her life and will run until January 2014.
Amparo begin working with collage in the fifties for a fashion exhibition in Puerto Rico, collaborating with Eugenio Granell when he lectured at the University of Río Piedras. She imagined ephemeral places characterised by an overwhelming and interesting fantasy, combining things that apparently did not belong together.
In her creations we discover a great variety of shapes and colours full of life, visions of bodies turned into fragments and stories where contradictory worlds come together. Amparo does not paint or draw on these collages. Her work is the result of cutting and pasting with a great sense of balance, a faithful reflection of the ever-changing world in which this strong-willed woman lived.
In the different collages we find clippings from American magazines, which contain words in English that reflect a period of her life. Such incredible things as medieval soldiers interspersed with Egyptian figures or a woman’s legs, to which she adds a man’s body and face. Everything is accompanied by a good measure of humour and order.
